Commonly Asked Questions

Can therapy really help people?

There are lots of benefits that come from therapy.   Therapists can provide help in many areas that people might be struggling with.  Through providing support, psychotherapists can help with improving problem-solving skills and  coping strategies.  Issues such as depression, anxiety, anger, grief, relationship problems, trauma, self-esteem issues, and stress management. Many people also find that counselors can be a helpful in managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, and the stresses of daily life. Therapists can provide a new perspective on an ongoing problem.  The benefits that someone might obtain from therapy depends largely on how well they use the process and put into practice what they learn.

If I go to therapy, doesn't that mean I am not able to handle my own problems?

Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, there's nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it.  It is normally the healthier people who seek out therapy because they have enough self-awareness to realize they might need some assistance.   Therapy can provide long term benefits by giving you the tools you need to avoid triggers, re-direct damaging patterns, utilize healthy coping skills and help you successfully navigate whatever challenges that might come your way.

What can I expect from a psychotherapy session?

Hopefully, you will find the environment of counseling to be relaxing and comfortable.  At other times, depending on they situation you are discussing, you might find yourself challenged and uncomfortable.  It will vary, but each will hopefully be exactly what you need for growth and renewal.

During the first session, You can expect to be asked what you hope to get from psychotherapy, your personal history relevant to your issue, and current symptoms of the issue.

Frequency of follow-up visits will depend on severity of issue.  You and your therapist will discuss this in the first session and will continue to review as symptoms improve.
